SURABAYA, INDONESIA – The month of Muharram is filled with blessings and compassion, especially for those who wish to share happiness with others. Seizing this opportunity, DT Peduli organized a heartfelt event titled “Joyful Shopping”, involving 20 orphans and underprivileged children from Kebonsari Orphanage and Insan Qur’an Scholarship recipients.
The event began on Friday afternoon at 2:00 PM with a shared meal at Me Gacoan A. Yani. Children aged between 5 and 14 years old appeared excited and cheerful. They sat neatly, recited prayers before eating, and helped each other with tenderness. The older children lovingly assisted the younger ones who needed help, creating a touching and heartwarming atmosphere.
After lunch, the group continued to Reny Swalayan, where each child received a shopping allowance of IDR 250,000. They were free to choose daily necessities such as rice, cooking oil, and eggs on the first floor, as well as school supplies and clothing on the second floor. Some chose notebooks, pencils, pens, and school tumblers, while others selected simple fashion items.
This activity was not just about meeting their basic needs—it also served as a meaningful educational moment. The children learned how to make decisions, budget wisely, and take responsibility for their choices.
One of the participants, Alya (8), a scholarship recipient from the Insan Qur’an program, shared her joy:
“I’m so happy to join this event. I had lunch with friends, and I got to pick the things I needed myself. I bought notebooks, pencils, and a tumbler for school, and also rice for my mom at home. Thank you to the DT Peduli donors. Please take us out again next time!” said Alya with a bright smile.
After the shopping session, the children took a short break before performing Maghrib prayer together—a peaceful conclusion to a meaningful and joyful day.
DT Peduli hopes that the Joyful Shopping initiative will inspire the wider community to continue caring for and supporting children in need. In this blessed month of Muharram, happiness can come from the simplest acts—especially when done with love and compassion.
