DT Gaza Mosque Becomes a Main Refuge, Area Filled with Thousands of Displaced People

September 26, 2025 | By Indra

GAZA — The Daarut Tauhiid (DT) Mosque in Gaza, located in Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip, has become a vital refuge for thousands of displaced residents fleeing from various regions. The area surrounding the mosque has been designated a “yellow zone,” considered relatively safer, which has led to a continuous influx of refugees from northern Gaza City, filling every corner of the neighborhood.

Since July 2025, the DT Mosque has reopened for prayers after previously being closed when the area was classified as a red zone. However, its courtyard and surrounding streets are now overcrowded with displaced families. Sheikh Yasin Jamal Ahmad Abukhsewan, the mosque’s Imam and Qur’an teacher, reported that the number of refugees has increased fivefold, creating extreme congestion and deeply concerning conditions.

Sheikh Yasin explained that the refugees face dire circumstances due to the severe shortage of necessities such as food, clean water, medicine, and heating for the approaching winter. Limited supplies and the difficulty of aid distribution have worsened the situation for thousands struggling to survive with minimal facilities.

He emphasized that international support—particularly from Indonesia—is crucial to sustain the refugees’ needs. He urged that assistance be prioritized for urgent necessities such as food and clean water, with donations directed straight to the DT Gaza Mosque to ensure they reach those most in need.

The Daarut Tauhiid Gaza Mosque continues to be safeguarded by Qur’an teachers, including Sheikh Yasin, Wafaa Gamal Ahmad Abukhsewan, and Sheikh Ismail Nezar Ismail Fayyad, who remain committed to continuing Qur’anic education despite the overwhelming challenges.
