Total Fidyah to Pay

Understanding Fidyah: A Compensation for Missed Fasts

Fidyah is a religious donation made in Islam to compensate for missed fasts during Ramadan. It is intended for individuals who are unable to fast due to valid long-term reasons, where there is no hope of making up the fasts later.

Who is Obliged to Pay Fidyah?

  • Elderly individuals who find fasting extremely difficult.
  • People with chronic illnesses where fasting could worsen their condition.
  • Individuals with permanent disabilities that prevent them from fasting.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women who fear for their own or their child’s health (subject to scholarly opinion, some may require making up the fast later, others fidyah).

Scholarly Perspectives on Fidyah

The Majority of Scholars (Jumhur Ulama)

The majority of scholars from the Hanafi, Shafi’i, and Hanbali schools of thought agree that Fidyah is a required compensation for those who are permanently unable to fast. The amount is typically equivalent to feeding one needy person for each day of missed fast. This is based on the Quranic verse in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 184.

Egyptian Dar al-Ifta

The esteemed Egyptian Dar al-Ifta aligns with the majority view, affirming that Fidyah is an obligatory expiation for those with a valid, permanent excuse for not fasting. They emphasize that the core purpose is to provide sustenance to the poor. They specify that the amount should be sufficient for an average meal for one person, which can be given as uncooked food staples (like rice) or its monetary equivalent, making it flexible in modern contexts.
