Baitul Quran Islamic Boarding School Students in Jakarta Learn How to Determine the Start of Ramadan

JAKARTA – The learning atmosphere at the Baitul Quran Islamic Boarding School of Daarut Tauhiid (DT) Jakarta, under the guidance of DT Peduli, felt different on Wednesday (6 August 2025). The students were not only listening to the ustadz’s explanation but were also actively engaging in group discussions.

The students explored the topic Determining the Start of Ramadan Using the Hisab and Rukyat Methods, which is part of the Ramadan fasting lessons in the book Safinatun Najah. They were divided into two groups — one focusing on the Hisab method and the other on the rukyat method.

The rukyat group explained that this method relies on direct observation of the new crescent moon (hilal) with the naked eye or optical instruments. Its advantage lies in following the practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. However, this method depends heavily on weather and geographical conditions, which can lead to different results in different regions.

On the other hand, the Hisab group presented that this method uses astronomical calculations to determine the moon’s position. Its strength is the certainty of knowing the timing well in advance, which facilitates planning. However, this method requires precision and can sometimes produce different outcomes if varying criteria are used.

The discussion became even more engaging when the ustadz explained the reasons behind differences in determining the start of Ramadan — from variations in the minimum height of the hilal, observation locations, to the choice of method by each organisation or country.

At the end of the session, the ustadz reminded students to approach such differences with wisdom.

“Differences in determining the start of Ramadan should not lead to disputes. They must be addressed with mutual respect and by following the decisions of Ulil Amri (leaders) or the government,” he said.

Through this discussion-based learning approach, the students are expected not only to understand Islamic jurisprudence theory but also to develop critical thinking, express their opinions, and respect differing viewpoints.
