LANGKAT — Emotions ran high as volunteers braved waist-deep floodwaters to deliver aid to residents affected by severe flooding in Tanjung Pura Subdistrict, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra, on Wednesday (3 December 2025).
The floods, which had inundated the area for several days, submerged homes, cut off access routes, and forced hundreds of families to seek refuge in multiple evacuation points. Amid the darkness of a power outage and roads that had turned into murky rivers, volunteers pressed on, determined to ensure that assistance reached those who needed it most.
Despite the limited number of aid packages—only 200—the team worked diligently to distribute them as fairly as possible, prioritizing vulnerable groups. To reach the evacuation site, volunteers had to rely on a large truck—one of the few vehicles capable of navigating the still-high floodwaters.
More than 900 people, many of them children and elderly residents, remained in evacuation shelters with limited access to food, clean water, and other basic necessities. The arrival of the volunteers brought a renewed sense of hope. Packages containing baby diapers, milk, medicines, snacks, clean water, and ready-to-eat meals were carefully unloaded from atop the truck.
As volunteers struggled to lower the supplies in light rain, one survivor quietly offered to help, saying, “Let us take them down… you must be tired coming all the way here.” The simple gesture, spoken in the middle of hardship, left the volunteers deeply moved.
Moments later, another survivor broke down in tears, saying that the assistance delivered that day was the largest they had received since the disaster struck. Gratitude, relief, and grief blended into an atmosphere that touched everyone at the scene.
According to DT Peduli volunteers, their brief encounter with survivors in the flooded area served as a powerful reminder that compassion remains a steady light—even in the darkest of times. They expressed hope that aid efforts would continue to reach other affected areas and provide survivors with the strength to rebuild their lives.
“May every aid package delivered be a source of strength, and may this chain of kindness continue until all residents of Tanjung Pura can rebuild their lives with peace and dignity,” one DT Peduli volunteer said, holding back tears.
